Always a textile town, Blackburn became the "weaving capital of the world" during the Industrial Revolution, when the Leeds and Liverpool Canal unloaded a constant flow of raw cotton. Textile production declined sharply after World War II, but you don't have to look hard for examples of the wealth created. These are undeniable in the amazing collections at Blackburn Museum and the majestic streets of Corporation Park. Blackburn's multicultural town centre has just undergone a makeover as part of the £45m Cathedral Quarter project, which has laid out a new square, hotels, and office buildings around the Gothic cathedral. After opening in 1874, Blackburn Museum became one of the first purpose-built museums outside of London. Its rich collections were donated to the city by textile industrialists such as Thomas Boys Lewis, who bequeathed a wonderful collection of Japanese prints.

Ropemaker R. E. Hart left to the museum one of the finest collections of coins and manuscripts in the country, including psalters and books of hours, a page from Gutenberg's Bible, and the Leges Aureus, a very rare gold coin from the reign of Octavian. You can see Shakespeare folios, traditional South Asian jewellery, and a large Egyptological collection including a mummy, mask, Shabti figurines, and a replica of the Rosetta Stone. In the Art Gallery, there are works by the Pre-Raphaelite Albert Moore and a sensational display of Japanese woodcuts. When the Diocese of Blackburn was created in 1926, the spacious parish church was elevated to a cathedral. There has been a church on this site since the Norman Conquest, but today's church is a Gothic Revival monument, begun in 1820 and extended and improved until 1977. As of 2018, the cathedral is at the heart of the renewed Cathedral Quarter, and one new addition is the elegant Cafe Northcote a short distance from the south transept.
